Q: In Austin Texas, can you get around fairly easily without a car?
I’m moving to Austin from a very small town (i.e. we have no public transportation at all). I have never ridden a bus (besides a school bus), or used the subway or a taxi cab or anything like that. How difficult is it to get around Austin without a car? I’m not afraid of walking or riding a bike to get where I need to go….it’s just that when I move I probably won’t have access to a car like I do where I live now. Thanks for the help.

A: There is public transportation here that is pretty reliable and nice w/good A/C (cheap as well, but I think they are raising the fees sometime in the future) – but it is pretty limited. Make sure you live somewhere on an active bus line if you’re not going to have a car, because the buses definitely don’t go everywhere. It’s possible to live without a car, but it’s not desirable since the city is so spread out and nearly everyone who lives here does have a car.

Check out http://www.capmetro.org/ – they have all the routes listed with maps and a trip planner where you put in the starting and ending addresses and it will tell you what buses to take and when.

Q: Donated Cars, Donated Equipment, Charities, And Foundations In Austin, Texas?
I have for quite some time trying to reach out for help, and pleading that someone might have a kind heart and generosity in their soul. I am a 64 year old disabled woman, who happens to have Fibromyalsia. Because I have to rely on Social Security Disability, extra funds are out of the question.I am also the single mom of a wonderful son, who happens to have Cerebral Palsy, and is severely mentally retarded. We have been a team for many years now, and will continue to do so.We are in desperate need of a donated car, DEPENDABLE and RELIABLE is a must. I have to walk everywhere with a cane, and there are many times it is difficult. I am also a cancer survivor, 7 years now, ever so grateful to be here. I’ve tried all organizations that say they donate cars, including freecharitycars.org, but have had no success. I even tried writing a letter to Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, no success there either. They help others on a very large and grand scale, and quite generous. They are good people. Michael Dell is also the founder of Dell Computers,….a gifted and intelligent man.Since I am just one singular person, I have fallen through the cracks, so I have been very unsuccessful in getting help from their foundation. I have tried everything, and every charitable organization and just keep running into walls.
Here’s what I am trying to do,…I am a photographer, and quite good at it. I have a Nikon D5000, and a beauty it is. Of course there are accessories I could use, would improve my work tremendously, but they are not free. I make a couple of bucks here and there, for me and my son. Portrait and candid shots, videos for family celebrations, and the such. I could offer so much more, but I need help. I am desperate for a workhorse of a computer, big hard drive and tons of memory; for film and video editing, this is a must. I have access to fantastic software, but I need a computer that works well and steadily. I could go so much further with my work if I had reliable transportation. Can’t very well propose a job, and be able to deliver and get there.
Here in Austin, there is a wonderful organization called ClearChoice.com, it’s a dental care organization, the talented dentists who run this place is Dr.Roberto Velasco, DDS and Dr. Todd Eggleston, DMD. After my cancer, I had very few teeth left, my gums were inflamed, so I became toothless. At that time I did get dentures, pretty ones at that. In the time that has passed, the gums has shrunk severely and I cannot wear the dentures, no matter what I do.Clear choice offers services that could keep the dentures in place and position, and not move anywhere and everywhere they may very well please. Going for meetings or proposals is out of the question,….tough to come across as presentable when you are toothless,….also difficult to understand in a conversation. I want to do my work, and look after my wonderful son, but I need help.
Hasn’t anyone out there been in a similar position, and someone offered a helping hand?

A: Since you are on line on the net, call The good Samaritans group or Red Cross, etc. Even if they are not related to your requirements, they will be the best people to know where to lead you to.

The other place may be the Church. I understand G Bush is from Texas so he mush be rich enough to at least take care of his fellow “statemen”. I am quite sure he would have ste up a Foundation or something like that.

No harm trying. All the best.

Q: I’m buying a mitsubishi eclipse used car. Which color would cost me the least?
Assume that I have a few cars with exact same features but they all differ in color. Which color would be the least expensive and which one would be the most expensive?
I am in Austin Texas.

A: Color should not matter at all since both are used. What should matter is the condition of the paint and the car in general. Some cars come out with a special edition only paint or a one of a kind paint in their car line up. Those cars usually cost more. A white Eclipse will be cheaper compared to a sunset pearlescent pearl colored Eclipse. Limited Edition paint jobs…yes they cost more! Other than that, it should not really matter.

Q: I need to rent a vechile using a visa debit check card what car rentals in Austin Texas accepts debit cards?

A: As long as it has a visa or matercard logo or a logo of a credit card company period, then all of them should

Q: Bought a used car and am unhappy. Can anything be done?
Ok, here’s the deal:

Back on the 5th of January (2010) I bought a used vehicle from a dealership (a Kia dealership) in Austin, Texas. When we went to test drive the vehicle, it wouldn’t start; the battery was dead. The salesman assured me that when cars sit on the lot not being used the batteries get low, and he had it jump started. It ran fine on the test drive and we decided to buy it.
During the little negotiation part with the salesman I asked for a new battery. He said the battery was fine and that if there was a problem I could bring it back and they would replace it.

Ok, no problem. We buy the car (finance with $5,000 down) and drive it home.

It continues to have problems starting (probably the battery I think), and I resign myself to having to take it back to get this dealt with. Well, yesterday, as my wife is driving it, the check engine light turns on and the vehicle gets stuck in 3rd gear. Definite problem! So, first (being the savvy fool I am) I take it to Firestone Auto for a full diagnostics before taking it back (I do NOT trust dealerships). They come back with a dead cell in the battery, and several transmission codes. I take the paperwork with me and return to the Kia dealership with the vehicle.

Thankfully, I bought the extended warranty (which apparently will cover the transmission problems), but not the battery. I am told to go talk to my sales person and that he can get me a battery. So, I speak with my sales guy and he tells me they won’t let me get a new battery and I have to talk to a manager. Manager says no dice.

He tells me that since the battery did not get mentioned during the paperwork stage and since it didn’t get written down there is nothing he can do. He also tells me there are no verbal agreements there.

So, my question is this:
Is there anything I can do to back out of the deal? It has been 25 days since I purchased the vehicle, and I haven’t made a payment yet. I am very unhappy with this dealership, and I feel slighted. If there is anyway I can give the car back and get my $5,000.00 back I would be very happy.

Any advice is appreciated.

A: Find someone to tickle you. It will make you feel happier about your mistake.

If you don’t get it in writing, you don’t have it at all.

Q: ok i put down 5 grand for a used car but no longer needed the extended warranty…?
well they sent the amount to the wrong bank…well that bank then sent us the check for the refund amount and now the used car dealership that we got the car from is now asking for a check from our back for that refund amount for they can just take that amount off the car…why cant i just keep the check? U kno? We did put down 5 grand and made every payment on time its not like we are not gonna pay them. I think we should be able to keep the check….do any of yall know what the standard policy is for this situation? Do i have to give them then check back to decrease how much i owe on the car? cant i jsut keep it? I hate these guys!!!! If you are in texas and in between san antonio and austin DO NOT buy any cars from the RANDY ADAMS DEALESHIP!

A: To make the contract legal the money has to go the right bank if it went to the wrong one it has to go to the right one. You keeping it is akin to stealing sorry mistakes happen. Its like trying to pay the electric bill and you send the water bill money as well just because the electric company refunded it to you does not mean you don’t still owe the water company. Also there is not a 3 day return policy in Texas.

Q: Will my car make it from Texas to California?
I have a 1996 buick riviera with a little over a hundred thousand miles on it. with a super charged engine. the brakes were replaced a year and a half ago. I was recently in a minor accident that slightly damaged the front bumper (just scrapes really) VERY slightly buckled the hood, and apparently threw off the entire front of the car so that it’s now tilted about a quarter inch to the driver’s side (according to the insurance company, that is). Despite all that it drives fine and I regularly use it for 2-4 hour road trips. I may need to drive it from austin, texas to los angeles this summer. My family is moving out there. My mother thinks that my car will fall apart and absolutely cannot go, but unless I drive I won’t be able to bring my dog and I will have to find something to do with him for the month+ that i’m out there. Would my car be ok? or is it just too old?

A: We have customers with older vehicles that drive this distance 2 to 3 times a year and all that you need to do is have the mechanic that works on the family vehicles do what we call a (pre-trip) inspection.

This is a bumper to bumper inspection including everything and changing or replacing what is needed with the owners okay and if they say its good then drive in and drive safe…

Q: Car Catalytic Converter…. need help?
Hi, I just got a call from my boyfriend. I just wanted to get someone else opinion. He said that he took our Hyundai Tiburon GT 03′ with 89,000 miles to a auto shop, required for the admissions test he has to pass. They told him that it didn’t pass because of the catalytic converter. It was also going to cost him $800.00 to fix it? Is he getting ripped off? Where can he get it fixed for less? Also we live in Austin Texas… and we recently bought this car, used from a friend. please help, and please no rude comments. Thanks!!!

A: He needs to get another opinion. Catalytic converters can clog up, and eventually wear out, but 89,000 miles sounds way too soon. It is one of the more expensive dealer installed parts in the emissions system, so that may be why this shop is claiming it is the problem. You can get aftermarket catalytic converters for WAY less that $800 from auto parts stores or on the Internet. I smell a rat here.

Remember it is ILLEGAL to throw away a catalytic converter. They are considered a hazardous material, and must be disposed of properly.

Q: So I want to use a Grenade for a shift knob?
I have a dud grenade I bought at a gun show a few years ago and today my brother and I where pondering on the legal side of using it for my shift knob in my car. Would it be illegal to do this? I live in Austin, Texas btw.

A: Nothing illegal I can think of. The top of the grenade is threaded where you screw-in the fuse, and the shifter on your Mustang is threaded to hold the knob, sooo, all you need is a thread adapter to go between the two.

Q: Out-of-state charges on Texas toll roads?
I have an out-of-state license plate on the rental car I’m using. I keep hearing mixed answers about whether or not these roads charge the people with out-of-state plates? The website for it doesn’t tell me, and my rental place is closed right now. Thanks for any help. (I’m using the roads in Austin, TX)

A: The toll is the same, based on car size/type.
Yes they charge out of staters AND in staters, you are paying to use the road.

Q: Why are gas prices so high in America and do you think it is expected to get worse?
I am angry at pretty much every American right now including my own family and the government for incompetence. The reason I say this is because I look at everyone in America that says it is their right to own and drive a car. I am wondering if many Americans decided not to drive then would the cost of gasoline go down? I just came back from China and most people there didn’t even own a car and they used transit like buses, trains, the subway, bicycles, and taxis. I am wondering if Americans are too spoiled and it is our fault and the government for making it too easy to get and drive a car here. There are so many rules and regulations in China on driving a car and here there are hardly none. My question is do you think the problem here is going to get better or worse? Do you think gasoline would go down if there was more public transit here, I live in Austin, Texas and the bus system here pretty much sucks as well as many other parts of the state. Do you think things will change?

A: Yes, I agree with you. Hopefully, with the rise in gas prices, people will start demanding that their elected representatives build alternative modes of transport, like trains and buses. Also, hopefully car companies will start making more efficient cars.

Q: Driver Crash Report CR-2 Form ?
Since i could not find a more appropriate sub-form, so posting under this category. I had a accident last week in austin, texas, it was other party’s fault, the other party accepted it and other party’s insurance co. is taking care of getting my car repaired.

Wanted to know 3 things :

1) Will it affect my Driving history in any way , even though it was her fault and she accepted it ?
2) Since there are some repairs which are going to be done on my car, is it going to appear on my car history, if somebody looks through carfax.com using my car VIN No. ?
3) Lastly cop gave both of us to fill Cr-2 form i.e. Driver Crash report, is it just for the purpose of statistics that they are trying to capture how many accident are happening in county/city/state ? or is it more related with making bad remarks in my history ?

Waiting for your reply.

Regards

Neeraj

A: 1. No it will not affect you or your rates with your insurance company.

2. Yes and No, it depends on the amount of the repairs, for minor repairs no but for major repairs yes.

3. This report is completed by a driver involved in a traffic crash when the crash is not investigated by a law enforcement officer and apparent damage is $1,000 or more or when the crash resulted in injury or death and is used to collection and analysis of traffic crash data..

4. Under state law, crash reports can be released the requester must provide at least two of the following pieces of information..

Date of the crash
Location of the crash
Name of any person involved in the crash

Q: Getting closer to a police state?
Recently the Austin Texas police have started using traffic light cameras, running license plates without probable cause to see if the car is insured, taking blood without the permission of people who refuse a breathalyzer test, and now they (the police) are getting machines to check the finger prints of people in the public and on the streets that they (the police) have “probable cause” to suspect of wrong doing or having warrants. My question is this. Do you think that this is violating our civil rights? Do you think that this is a sign that we are indeed moving closer to a police state? Where will it end, or will it?
I am not a criminal, I have no warrants, my car is legal, and I have insurance. I still feel that this is very wrong and is a violation of civil rights here in America!
The sheep, and blind followers are the only ones who do not see this as a violation of our civil rights!
Thomas R. Good point about some of these things however the police are forcing people to give blood! It is a no refusal blood draw!
RAMBO, I have already been stocking up on both!
Thomas R. You are not following me. If you refuse the breath test, the have a judge ready to issue a warrant. Thay then take you to a van or the station wich ever is closest and forcibly draw blood from you while you are being restrained if you refuse that! Thats just the facts. It is a no refusal program that has been used around Halloween and New Years. You have no choice! They draw your blood even if you refuse!
The reason for the blood draw was because of the number of people who refused the breath test. It was then up to the police and court system to prove that they were intoxicated. With this new program they get their proof no matter what! Look it up its Austin Texas. The program has been brought to us by the police chief Art Acevedo by way of California (imagine that)!
We here in Austin call them Vampire holidays when they use the no refusal program! What do they do with the blood? Do they put it in some kind of database?

A: You betcha. The police are increasingly militarized and we are being conditioned to accept the use of military for law enforcement.

Q: Im 19 with no credit, what kind of car could i make payments on?
i live in houston Texas with my parents right now working for DirecTV making about $3000-4000 a month. At the end of this year (2007) i want to quit my job and goto community college (HCC) and then starting the next school year ill be moving in with some friends in Austin and then continue school at their community college. But what i need to know is when i quit my job with my last check plus whatever i can save from now how do i go about getting a car and making payments on it. I would be working parttime someelse here in houston and there in austin after i leave directv to pay for myself and my parents will pick up the car payments.

Is the best route to goto a dealership? used car lots?

i remember somthing about dealerships offering programs for people in college, are those any good?

it would be cheaper to stay home but i want to leave houston and DTV because i dont like working 6 days a week all day long just wasting my life away. id rather goto school and party

A: go to a buy here pay here car lot. they don’t check your credit, and with enough down payment and full coverage insurance, anyone can get a vehicle.
